Thérèse was taught at home until she was eight and a half, and then entered the school kept by the Benedictine nuns of the Abbey of Notre Dame du Pre in Lisieux. Thérèse, taught well and carefully by Marie and Pauline, found herself at the top of the class, except for writing and arithmetic. However, because of her young age and high grades, she was bullied. The one who bullied her the most was a girl of fourteen who did poorly at school. Thérèse suffered very much as a result of her sensitivity, and she cried in silence. Furthermore, the boisterous games at recreation were not to her taste. She preferred to tell stories or look after the little ones in the infants' class. "The five years I spent at school were the saddest of my life, and if my dear Céline had not been with me I could not have stayed there for a single month without falling ill." On her free days she became more and more attached to Marie Guérin, the younger of her two cousins in Lisieux. The two girls would play at being anchorites, as the great Teresa had once played with her brother. And every evening she plunged into the family circle. "Fortunately, I could go home every evening and then I cheered up. I used to jump on Father's knee and tell him what marks I had had, and when he kissed me all my troubles were forgotten...I needed this sort of encouragement so much." Yet the tension of the double life and the daily self-conquest placed a strain on Thérèse. Going to school became more and more difficult.

On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in the apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus. A little more than three years later, on February 11, 1858, a young lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous. This began a series of visions. During the apparition on March 25, the lady identified herself with the words: “I am the Immaculate Conception.”
Bernadette was a sickly child of poor parents. Their practice of the Catholic faith was scarcely more than lukewarm. Bernadette could pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Creed. She also knew the prayer of the Miraculous Medal: “O Mary conceived without sin.”

During interrogations Bernadette gave an account of what she saw. It was “something white in the shape of a girl.” She used the word aquero, a dialect term meaning “this thing.” It was “a pretty young girl with a rosary over her arm.” Her white robe was encircled by a blue girdle. She wore a white veil. There was a yellow rose on each foot. A rosary was in her hand. Bernadette was also impressed by the fact that the lady did not use the informal form of address (tu), but the polite form (vous). The humble virgin appeared to a humble girl and treated her with dignity.

Through that humble girl, Mary revitalized and continues to revitalize the faith of millions of people. People began to flock to Lourdes from other parts of France and from all over the world. In 1862 Church authorities confirmed the authenticity of the apparitions and authorized the cult of Our Lady of Lourdes for the diocese. The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes became worldwide in 1907.

Fis-sena 1858, erba’ snin wara l-proklamazzjoni tad-Domma tal-Kunċizzjoni, il-Madonna dehret ġewwa Lourdes fi Franza lil tfalja ta’ 14-il sena, illum qaddisa, Bernadette Soubirous. Mill-11 ta’ Frar sas-16 ta’ Lulju 1858 il-Madonna dehret 18-il darba fil-vilaġġ ta’ Lourdes li jinsab fin-nofsinhar ta’ Franza fil-Hautes-Pyrenees.
Il-Madonna dehret dejjem b’libsa bajda b’ċintorin ċelesti u bil-ward b’kulur id-deheb fuq saqajha t-tnejn u b’kuruna f’idha. Fit-18 ta’ Jannar tal-1860 dawn id-dehriet ġew rikonoxxuti mill-Isqof tal-post, ta’ Tarbes, Monsinjur Laurence.
Il-Papa Beatu Piju IX approva d-dehriet fl-1862. Il-Papa Ljun XIII kiteb l-Ittra Appostolika Parte Humanae Generi fl-okkażjoni tad-dedikazzjoni tal-Katidral il-ġdid ġewwa Lourdes fl-1879. Il-Papa San Piju X waqqaf il-festa tal-Madonna ta’ Lourdes. Il-Papa Piju XI ibbeatifika lil Bernadette Soubirous fl-14 ta’ Gunju 1925 u għamilha qaddisa fit-8 ta’ Diċembru 1933. Il-Papa Piju XII semma l-Madonna ta’ Lourdes fl-enċiklika tiegħu tal-1954 Fulgens Corona. Il-Papa San Ġwanni Pawlu II żar dan il-post qaddis tliet darbiet u l-Papa Benedittu XVI mar Lourdes fil-15 ta’ Settembru 2008 fl-okkazjoni tal-150 sena tad-dehriet.
Id-dehriet ġraw fil-11, 14, 18, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 27 u 28 ta’ Frar u fl-1, 2, 3, 4 u 25 ta’ Marzu, fis-7 ta’ April u fis-16 ta’ Lulju.
L-ewwel dehra tkun proprju l-Ħamis 11 ta’ Frar, ta’ qabel Ras ir-Randan tal-1858. Dakinhar Bernadette (isem proprju Marie-Bernarde) flimkien ma’ oħtha u ħabiba, marret tiġbor ftit zkuk u ħatab minn ħdejn il-għar ta’ Massabielle (Tuta de Massavielha) ftit ‘il barra minn Lourdes biex tkun tista’ tbigħhom u tixtri ftit ħobż. Waqt li kienet waħeda dehritilha l-Madonna fil-blat bħala mara sabiħa. 
Fit-tieni dehra Bernadette wara li nsistiet ħafna ma’ ommha Louise li għandha terġa’ tmur, ħadet ftit ilma mbierek mill-knisja biex tixħtu lill-Madonna ħalli tivverifika li din id-dehra kienet verament ġejja minn Alla. 
Fit-tielet dehra l-Madonna talbet lit-tfalja biex tiġi fil-għar ta’ Massabielle għal 15-il ġurnata.
Fir-raba’ dehra t-tfajla ħadet ukoll lil ommha, żewġ zijiet u n-nanna tagħha. 
Fil-ħames dehra kien hemm preżenti tletin persuna. 
Fis-sitt dehra kien hemm mal-mitt persuna preżenti u l-Madonna talbet lit-tfalja biex titlob għall-midinbin. 
Fis-seba’ dehra kien mal-150 persuna preżenti u dakinhar il-Madonna qalet sigriet lil Bernadette. 
Fit-tmien dehra kien hemm mal-250 persuna preżenti u l-messaġġ tal-Madonna kien: penitenza, penitenza, penitena u biex titlob għall-midinbin u tbus il-ħamrija bħala penitenza għall-midinbin.
Fid-disa’ dehra l-Madonna talbet lil Bernadette biex tixrob l-ilma mill-ħamrija u tiekol il-ħaxix fl-art.
Fl-għaxar dehra kienu preżenti madwar 800 ruħ u fil-ħdax-il dehra kien hemm ‘il fuq minn elf persuna. 
Fit-tnax-il dehra kien hemm prezenti kważi elf u ħames mitt ruħ fejn omm li kienet qed tistenna tarbija u li kienet maħkuma minn paraliżi f’idejha ġiet imfejqa mill-ilma tal-għar ta’ Massabielle fejn kienet tidher il-Madonna.
Fit-tlettax-il dehra l-Madonna ordnat lit-tfajla tgħid lis-saċerdoti biex jiġu hemmhekk f’purċissjoni u jibnulha kappella imma l-qassis Abbè Dominique Peyramale ma emminix. 
Fl-erbatax-il dehra l-Madonna tbissmet lil Bernadette. 
Fil-ħmistax-il dehra kien hemm mad-disat elef persuna u l-Madonna reġgħet tbissmet lil Bernadette. 
Is-sittax-il dehra damet madwar siegħa u dakinhar il-Madonna qaltilha li hi l-Immakulata Kunċizzjoni.
It-tfajla marret tiġri tgħid dan l-isem lill-kappillan. 
Fis-sbatax-il dehra t-Tabib Pierre Romaine Dozous kien konvint li verament Bernadette kellha dawn id-dehriet tal-Madonna.
Fl-aħħar dehra, minħabba li s-Sindku ta’ Lourdes għalaq l-aċċess għall-grotta tal-Madonna, Bernadette rat ukoll il-Madonna minkejja li kienet għarkupptejja ‘l barra mill-grotta.
Lourdes illum
Hu stmat li mal-200 miljun pellegrin marru Lourdes sa mis-sena 1860. Illum ġewwa Lourdes issib 22 knisja jew kappella.
Fost postijiet qaddisa nsibu l-knisja dedikata lill-Qalb ta’ Ġesù fejn tgħammdet Bernadette fid-9 ta’ Jannar 1844; il-grotta ta’ Massabielle fejn għal 18-il darba l-Madonna dehret lil Bernadette, is-Santwarju ta’ Lourdes li fih il-Bażilika tal-Immakulata, il-kripta u l-Bażilika tar-Rużarju. Insibu ukoll il-Bażilika Santa Bernadette kif ukoll d-dar fejn twieldet fis-7 ta’ Jannar 1844.
Illum wieħed jista’ ukoll jara l-kapulavur ta’ możajċi magħmula taħt id-direzzoni ta’ Monsinjur Rupnik. Jingħad li nsibu mas-7,000 każ ta’ mirakli ta’ fejqan bl-interċessjoni tal-Madonna ta’ Lourdes.
Lourdes jibqa’ il-post tal-pellegrinaġġi li l-iktar jiġbed lejh pellegrini matul is-sena kollha. Madwar sitt miljun ruħ fis-sena.

Like us in all things but sin, God entered into the world in both a Holy Family and a Human Family. The Holy Family to show man how to live his Faith in a Holy way; and the Human Family to bring to salvation and life every person of every age.
