THE GOSPEL

Jn 19:25-27 -- The Blessed Virgin Mother, present with John, disciple, at the Crucifixion of Jesus

[Ġw:19:25] Kien hemm wieqfa ħdejn is-salib ta' Ġesù ommu, oħt ommu, Marija ta' Kleofa, u Marija ta' Magdala. [Ġw:19:26] Mela kif Ġesù lemaħ lil ommu u lid-dixxiplu li kien iħobb wieqaf ħdejha, qal lil ommu: "Mara, hawn hu ibnek." [Ġw:19:27] Mbagħad qal lid-dixxiplu: "Hawn hi ommok." U minn dak il-ħin id-dixxiplu ħadha għandu.

IL-VERĠNI MQADDSA MARIJA TAL-KARMELU

Il-Profeta Elija tela’ fuq l-għolja Karmelu, il-Palestina, biex jitlob għax-xita għax l-art kienet niexfa qoxqox.  F’daqqa waħda ra sħaba żgħira tielgħa mill-baħar.  Wara, is-sema nkesa bis-sħab, u niżlet xita qawwija. (1 Slat. 18)

Fit-tnax-il seklu, Eremiti nsara marru jgħixu ħajja ta’ talb u ġabra fuq din l-għolja.

Huma xebbħu dik is-sħaba żgħira li kien ra elija mal-Madonna, Omm Alla, li ġabet il-ħajja vera fid-dinja li kienet mejta.  Bdew jonoraw lill-Madonna b’titlu ġdid, il-Madonna tal-għolja tal-Karmelu, u waqqfu Ordni ddedikat prinċipalment għal ħajja kontemplattiva taħt il-patroċinju tal-Madonna.  Illum insibuh bl-isem ta’ l-Ordni tal-Karmelitani.

F’dan l-istess jum niċċelebraw il-festa tal-Labtu tal-Madonna tal-Karmelu.  Hemm tradizzjoni li tgħid li fis-16 ta’ Lulju 1251, il-Madonna dehret lil San Xmun Stock li kien is-sitt superjur Ġenerali tal-Karmelitani, f’Cambridge, l-Ingilterra, u wrietu l-labtu, u wegħdet grazzi speċjali għal kull minn jilbsu.

Il-Papa Benedittu XIII fis-sena 1726, estenda l-festa tal-Madonna tal-Karmelu fis-16 ta’ Lulju, mal-Knisja kollha.

Talba
O Marija, jien mhux biss fil-perikoli, fid-dubji, fid-diffikultajiet, naħseb fik u nsejjaħlek.  Insejjaħlek issa u dejjem.  Nagħmel hekk għax inħobbok.  Int tinsab f’qalbi, u ismek spiss fuq xofftejja.  Minn qiegħ qalbi nsellimlek, infaħħrek u ntennilek:  Is-sliem għalik Marija, mimlija bil-grazzja.

July 16 (July 18 in USA) is the day that the Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Mount Caramel. Mount Carmel is the mountain inthe middle of the plain of Galilee on which the prophet Elijah called down a miracle of fire from the Lord, to show the people of Israel who had strayed that "The Lord is God!" and that the prophets of Baal were worshipping a false god.
There is a tradition that traces the Carmelite Order's informal beginnings to the prophet Elijah himself, even though there is no evidence of this.
The formal beginnings are attributed to a group of monks who, in the 13th century, began living and praying on the mountain. They venerated the Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and from this veneration was derived the name Carmelite.
In 1226 the rule of the order was approved by Pope Honorius III, and 21 years later St. Simon Stock, an Englishman, was elected superior of the order. On July 16, 1251, the Blessed Virgin appeared to Simon and gave him the brown scapular and promised her protection to all those who wear the brown habit.
Pope Pius X decreed in the early 20th century that this blessing of the Blessed Virgin would extend to all who wear the medal of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was instituted by the Carmelites sometime between 1376 and 1386.
