Thou Art a Priest Forever

Thou Art a Priest Forever

Jean-Baptiste Henri Lacordaire, O.P. (1802-1861)

To live in the midst of the world with no desire for its pleasures; to be a member of every family, yet belonging to none; to share all sufferings; to penetrate all secrets, to heal all wounds; to daily go from men to God to offer Him their homage and petitions; to return from God to men to bring them His pardon and hope; to have a heart of fire for charity and a heart of bronze for chastity; to bless and to be blest forever. O God, what a life, and it is yours, O Priest of Jesus Christ!

Psalm 8 - Salm 8

Salm 8. Il-kobor ta' Alla u d-dinjità tal-bniedem

 (S:8:1) Għall-mexxej tal-kor. Fuq"Il-Gitti?". Salm ta' David.

(S:8:2) Mulej, Sid tagħna, kemm hu kbir ismek fl-art kollha! Int qegħedt is-sebħ tiegħek 'il fuq mis-smewwiet.

 (S:8:3) Int, li s-sebħ tiegħek jgħannih fomm it-tfal u t-trabi tal-ħalib; int, li bnejt sur kontra l-għedewwa, biex iġġib fix-xejn l-għadu u 'l min iqum kontrik.

(S:8:4) Nħares lejn is-smewwiet, għemil subgħajk, il-qamar u l-kwiekeb li int qegħedt fihom!

(S:8:5) X'inhu l-bniedem biex tiftakar fih, bin il-bniedem, biex taħseb fih?

 (S:8:6) Ftit inqas mill-allat għamiltu, bis-sebħ u l-ġmiel żejjintu,

(S:8:7) qegħedtu fuq l-għemejjel kollha ta' idejk! Kollox taħt riġlejh qegħedtlu:

 (S:8:8) in-nagħaġ u l-baqar kollha, sa l-bhejjem tax-xagħri;

 (S:8:9) l-għasafar ta' l-ajru u l-ħut tal-baħar, dak kollu li jterraq

 fil-baħar.

(S:8:10) Mulej, Sid tagħna, kemm hu kbir ismek fl-art kollha!

Mill-ewwel ITTRA ta' San Pawl lil Korintin, Kapitlu 14.
 Id-doni ta' l-ilsna u l-profezija

[1Kor:14:1] Fittxu l-imħabba; ixxennqu wkoll għad-doni ta' l-Ispirtu, l-aktar għad-don tal-profezija.[1Kor:14:2] Għax min jitkellem bl-ilsna ma jkunx jitkellem mal-bnedmin, iżda ma' Alla; lil dan ħadd... ma jifhmu, għaliex ikun qiegħed jitkellem bl-Ispirtu fuq misteri.[1Kor:14:3] Imma dak li jipprofetizza jkun jitkellem mal-bnedmin, biex jibni u jħeġġeġ u jqawwi l-qalb.[1Kor:14:4] Min jitkellem bl-ilsna, lilu nnifsu jkun jibni; iżda min jipprofetizza jkun qed jibni l-Knisja.[1Kor:14:5] Lkoll kemm intom nixtieqkom titkellmu bl-ilsna, iżda aktar irridkom tipprofetizzaw; għax min jipprofetizza jiswa aktar minn min jitkellem bl-ilsna, jekk xi ħadd ma jfissirx x'ikun qiegħed jgħid, ħalli tinbena l-Knisja .[1Kor:14:6] Issa, ħuti, kieku jiena kelli niġi fostkom nitkellem bl-ilsna, x'ikun jiswielkom jekk il-kliem li ngħidilkom ma jkunx fih xi rivelazzjoni jew għerf, jew profezija, jew tagħlim?[1Kor:14:7] L-istess bħal fl-istrumenti tad-daqq bla ħajja, flawt jew ċetra; kieku dawn ma jagħtux ilħna li jingħażlu minn xulxin, kif jista' wieħed jagħraf x'inhu jindaqq bil-flawt jew x'inhu jindaqq biċ-ċetra?[1Kor:14:8] U jekk it-trumbetta tagħti leħen li ma tagħrafx x'inhu, min iħejji ruħu għat-taqbida?[1Kor:14:9] Hekk ukoll intom: jekk bi lsienkom ma tlissnux kliem li jinftiehem, kif jista' wieħed jifhem xi tkunu tgħidu? Tkunu qegħdin titkellmu fl-ajru.[1Kor:14:10] Hemm bosta ilħna fid-dinja, u ebda wieħed minnhom ma hu bla sens.[1Kor:14:11] Imma jekk jiena ma nagħrafx is-sens tal-leħen, nkun barrani għal min jitkellem, u min jitkellem ikun barrani għalija.[1Kor:14:12] Hekk ukoll intom, ladarba intom imxennqin għad-doni spiritwali, fittxu li timtlew sewwa bihom, imma dejjem għall-bini tal-Knisja.[1Kor:14:13] Għalhekk, min jitkellem bl-ilsna għandu jitlob id-don tat-tifsir.[1Kor:14:14] Għax jekk jiena nitlob bl-ilsna, l-ispirtu tiegħi jkun jitlob, imma moħħi jibqa' bla frott.[1Kor:14:15] X'nagħmel mela? Nitlob bl-ispirtu; imma nitlob b'moħħi wkoll. Nkanta s-salmi bl-ispirtu; imma nkanta b'moħħi wkoll.[1Kor:14:16] Jekk inti tfaħħar bl-ispirtu, kif jista' wieħed li ma għandux din il-grazzja jgħid"Ame?" għal radd il-ħajr tiegħek meta ma jafx x'inti tgħid?[1Kor:14:17] Inti tkun trodd il-ħajr sewwa, imma l-ieħor ma jedifikax ruħu.[1Kor:14:18] Niżżi ħajr lil Alla li jien nitkellem bl-ilsna aktar minnkom ilkoll;[1Kor:14:19] imma fil-ġemgħa tal-Knisja aktar irrid ħames kelmiet b'moħħi li jinftiehmu biex ngħallem lill-oħrajn, milli għaxart elef bl-ilsna.[1Kor:14:20] Ħuti , tkunux bħat-tfal fi ħsiebkom; kunu tfal fil-ħażen, imma nkunu rġiel magħmula fi ħsibijietkom.[1Kor:14:21] Fil-Liġi hemm miktub: “Permezz ta’ nies b’ilsien barrani, u b’xufftejn stranġieri nkellem lil dan il-poplu; u b’dan kollu anqas ma jisimgħuni,” jgħid il-Mulej. [1Kor:14:22] Mela d-don ta' l-ilsna hu sinjal mhux għal min jemmen, iżda għal min ma jemminx; id-don tal-profezija mhux għal min ma jemminx, iżda għal min jemmen.[1Kor:14:23] Jekk, ngħidu aħna, il-Knisja kollha tiltaqa' f'post wieħed u kulħadd jitkellem bl-ilsna, u jidħlu xi katekumeni sempliċi jew nies li ma jemmnux, ma jgħidux li intom barra minn sensikom?[1Kor:14:24] Imma jekk ilkoll tipprofetizzaw u jidħol xi ħadd li ma jemminx jew xi katekumenu sempliċi, dan iħoss ruħu mwiddeb minn kulħadd, u ġġudikat minn kulħadd,[1Kor:14:25] jinkixfulu l-fehmiet moħbija ta' qalbu u b'hekk jixteħet wiċċu fl-art u jadura lil Alla u jistqarr: "Tassew li Alla f'nofskom?"

Kollox bl-ordni

[1Kor:14:26] Xi ngħidu, mela, ħuti? Meta intom tiltaqgħu, wieħed jista' jkollu xi salm, ieħor xi tagħlima, ieħor xi rivelazzjoni, ieħor xi kelma b'ilsien barrani, ieħor xi tifsira; kollox iservi għall-edifikazzjoni.[1Kor:14:27] Tridu titkellmu bl-ilsna? Ħalli jitkellmu tnejn jew l-aktar tlieta, imma wieħed wara l-ieħor u xi ħaddieħor ifisser xi jkun jingħad.[1Kor:14:28] Jekk ma jkunx hemm min ifisser, fil-ġemgħa ma għandu jitkellem ħadd; ħalli jitkellem għalih innifsu, bejnu u bejn Alla.[1Kor:14:29] Il-profeti jitkellmu, tnejn jew tlieta, u l-oħrajn iqisu dak li jingħad.[1Kor:14:30] Jekk xi ħadd bilqiegħda jkollu xi rivelazzjoni, l-ewwel wieħed għandu jiskot.[1Kor:14:31] Intom lkoll tistgħu tipprofetizzaw, imma wieħed wara l-ieħor, sabiex ilkoll titgħallmu u tagħmlu l-qalb.[1Kor:14:32] L-ispirti tal-profeti għandhom ikunu taħt il-ħakma tal-profeti,[1Kor:14:33] għax Alla m'hux Alla tad-diżordni iżda tas-sliem.[1Kor:14:34] Bħalma jsir fil-Knisja kollha tal-qaddisin, in-nisa għandhom iżommu s-skiet fil-laqgħa; ma għandhomx permess jitkellmu imma joqogħdu suġġetti, bħalma tgħid ukoll il-Liġi.[1Kor:14:35] Jekk ikunu jridu jitgħallmu xi ħaġa, jistaqsu lil żwieġhom id-dar; ma jixraqx li mara titkellem fil-ġemgħa tal-Knisja.[1Kor:14:36] Jaqaw mingħandkom ħarġet il-kelma ta' Alla? Jew għandkom biss waslet?[1Kor:14:37] Jekk xi ħadd jaħseb li hu profeta jew bniedem b'xi don spiritwali, kunu afu li dan li ktibtilkom hu preċett tal-Mulej.[1Kor:14:38] Jekk ma jagħtix kas ta' dan, tagħtux kasu intom.[1Kor:14:39] Mela, ħuti, fittxu li tipprofetizzaw, iżda żżommux lil min jitkellem bl-ilsna.[1Kor:14:40] Ħa jsir kollox kif imur u bl-ordni.

First Letter of St Paul to the Corinthians, chapter 14.

1 Corinthians 14

Intelligibility in Worship
1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy. 2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. 3 But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort. 4 Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified. 6 Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? 7 Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the pipe or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? 8 Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? 9 So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10 Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker is a foreigner to me. 12 So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church.

13 For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding. 16 Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer, say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying? 17 You are giving thanks well enough, but no one else is edified.
18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20 Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults. 21 In the Law it is written:
“With other tongues
and through the lips of foreigners
I will speak to this people,
but even then they will not listen to me,
says the Lord.”
22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and inquirers or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24 But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, 25 as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”
Good Order in Worship
26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and to God. 29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. 30 And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.
34 Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.
36 Or did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 37 If anyone thinks they are a prophet or otherwise gifted by the Spirit, let them acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command. 38 But if anyone ignores this, they will themselves be ignored.
39 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.
