The Continental Phase of the Synod on Synodality, on the theme: “For a synodal Church: communion, participation and mission”

Synod 2023: The challenge of a "listening church"

27 Aug 2022 - A Catholic cardinal tells journalists that only the Holy Spirit will be hijacking the Church's Synod on Synodality. The comments came during a press conference at the Holy See's press office today. This was just one of the comments making headlines, especially surrounding the German Synodal Way. Cardinal Mario Grech used clear words distancing, the so-called Synod on Synodality from the German Synodal Path, but activists and bishops have called for a change of Church teachings around controversial topics such as same sex marriage or ordination of women to the priesthood. Pope Francis started the process of soliciting feedback and opinions from the faithful around the globe only last year. So far, the Secretariat for the Senate has received more than 100 reports from Bishops' conferences across the globe.

Pope Francis published a letter on the liturgy this June, nearly one year after the motu proprio Traditionis custodes, which limits the celebration of the Traditional Mass. In the fifteen-page apostolic letter, Desiderio Desideravi, the pope said he wanted “to invite the whole Church to rediscover, to safeguard, and to live the truth and power of the Christian celebration.”
