DIVINE MERCY FILM - The Original Image of Divine Mercy ABOUT THE ORIGINAL IMAGE OF DIVINE MERCY A DOCUMENTARY
A team of documentarists travel through Europe and the United States uncovering the details of the untold story about the little-known Original Image of Divine Mercy. In 1934, at the request of Jesus himself, Saint Faustina and her confessor, Blessed Fr. Michal Sopocko, secretly began working with a relatively unknown artist to duplicate on a canvas her mystical vision of the Merciful Jesus. With Fr. Michal modeling as Christ for many hours, the three unlikely friends came up with the only Image of Divine Mercy that Saint Faustina ever saw. But after all the corrections and touch-ups at the insistence of Saint Faustina, the violently anti-Catholic Soviet Occupation of Vilnius, Lithuania, forced the painting into hiding. Finally, two humble nuns accepted the “mission impossible” and transported the miraculous painting across the dangerous border between Lithuania and Belarus.
In 2005, after 75 years of wandering, the painting was placed in a permanent home in a beautiful shrine in Vilnius according to the wishes of Saint Faustina and Blessed Fr. Michal Sopocko.
Despite the popularity of the devotion to the Divine Mercy around the world, very few realize that there is only one Original Image of Divine Mercy. How did so many other renderings of Saint Faustina’s vision become so well-known around the world while the Original Image remains in obscurity? Is this Original Image unique for reasons above and beyond the fact that it is the only image of Divine Mercy that Saint Faustina ever saw? What qualities about the painting are integral to the devotion and are unique to the Original Image? Did John Paul II know about the Original Image when he canonized Saint Faustina? Does this Image have a special role in the upcoming Year of Mercy? A timely documentary, The Original Image of Divine Mercy features key witnesses to the mysterious case of a painting that survived the Soviet Occupation of Vilnius, with exclusive commentary by Bishop Robert Barron, George Weigel, Christoph Cardinal Schönborn of Vienna, Stanisław Cardinal Dziwisz of Kraków, Fr. Dwight Longenecker, Harry Connick Jr., Jim Gaffigan, Immaculee Ilibagiza, Archbishop Fisichella, and many others including a special footage with Pope Francis. The Original Image of Divine Mercy is set to be THE FILM EVENT of the Holy Year of Mercy, and, beginning on Ash Wednesday of 2016, will be playing internationally throughout the Holy Year at parishes, schools and conferences celebrating the Jubilee Year of Mercy --- FROM December 8th (Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception), 2015 TO November 20th (Solemnity of Christ the King), 2016.

Il quadro della Divina Misericordia che custodiamo qui a Vilnius è “l’unica immagine che Santa Faustina ha visto. Tutte le altre immagini, compresa quella che tutti pensano sia l’originale e custodita a Cracovia, sono state realizzate dopo la morte di Suor Faustina e con l’aiuto delle fotografie dell’immagine autentica”. Così l’Arcivescovo di Vilnius (Lituania), mons. Gintaras Grušas, in un’intervista per il programma “Indagine ai confini del Sacro”, in onda domenica 23 aprile alle 22.45, in occasione della festa liturgica dedicata alla Divina Misericordia, ha rivendicato l’autenticità del dipinto chiarendo che il quadro custodito in Polonia in realtà è solo una copia. Nel reportage con immagini inedite, realizzato dal curatore del programma David Murgia, e dal titolo ‘Storia e segreti del vero quadro della Divina Misericordia’ l’Arcivescovo ha sottolineato che “dietro questo quadro c’è una lunga storia durata oltre cinquanta anni e per questo il ‘nostro’ quadro è l’immagine meno conosciuta nel mondo”. Tv2000, dando conto delle diverse paternità rivendicate dalla Lituania e dalla Polonia sul vero quadro del Gesù Misericordioso nato dalla richiesta di Cristo a Santa Faustina Kowalska in un’apparizione, ha ripercorso le vicende incredibili del dipinto che ha dato il via al culto omonimo praticato da milioni di persone. Al momento infatti sono due le immagini al mondo che rappresentano il Gesù Misericordioso su cui da anni è aperta una fervente contesa: il quadro dipinto per la prima volta a Vilnius in Lituania da un artista locale alla presenza di Suor Faustina e quello realizzato da un altro pittore 10 anni dopo nel 1943 nato dal alcune foto dell’originale e che venne posto nel Santuario della Divina Misericordia a Cracovia. Le vicende di questa immagine sono degne di una spy-story che si snoda tra Polonia, Lituania e Bielorussia, in cui si intrecciano guerre, persecuzioni, due regimi totalitari, alcune donne e due artisti. Questo dipinto, infatti, è stato nascosto, sembrava ormai perduto e infine è stato ritrovato. La conservazione nel tempo di questa immagine è da attribuire al meticoloso lavoro di alcune donne coraggiose che sono riuscite a salvare questo dipinto dal nazismo e dal comunismo. Anche a costo di sacrifici e deportazioni.
