The First Holy Martyrs of the Roman Church

June 30, (Proper Gospel)
Mt 24:4-13 -- Signs of the End of the Age, Persecution - Beware -- Il-bidu tat-tbatijiet

[Mt:24:4] U Ġesù weġibhom: "Araw li ħadd ma jqarraq bikom. [Mt:24:5] Għax għad jiġu ħafna f'ismi u jgħidu 'Jien hu l-Messija,' u jqarrqu b'ħafna nies. [Mt:24:6] Għad tisimgħu min jitkellem fuq gwerer u xnigħat ta' gwerer. Iftħu għajnejkom u titħawwdu xejn, għax dan jeħtieġ li jiġri, imma għadu m'huwiex it-tmiem. [Mt:24:7] Għax għad iqum ġens kontra ġens u saltna kontra saltna, ikun hawn ġuħ kbir, u l-art titheżheż f'ħafna bnadi. [Mt:24:8] Dan kollu jkun il-bidu ta' tbatija kbira. [Mt:24:9] Mbagħad jagħtukom f'idejn min iħabbatkom u joqtolkom; u l-ġnus kollha jsiru jobogħdukom minħabba f'ismi. [Mt:24:10] U jkun hemm ħafna li jitfixklu, li jittradixxu lil xulxin u jinbagħdu bejniethom. [Mt:24:11] Iqumu bosta profeti foloz u jqarrqu b'ħafna nies. [Mt:24:12] Joktor il-ħażen, u għalhekk l-imħabba tibred f'ħafna. [Mt:24:13] Imma min jibqa' jżomm sħiħ sa l-aħħar, dan isalva.

Tifkira Liturġika tal-Martirju tal-Appostlu Missierna San Pawl.

Pittura ta' San Pawl fil-knisja parrokkjali ta' San Pawl il-Baħar, Marija Addolorata, xogħol Adonai Camilleri Cauchi li saret fis-sena 2021

Grajja tal-Martirju ta' San Pawl.

Disa’ snin sħaħ martirju

Nistgħu ngħidu, mingħajr ma niżbaljaw, li l-aħħar disa’ snin ta’ ħajtu, għal Pawlu kienu fil-fatt martirju l-ħin kollu. Kien fis-sena 58, hekk kif wasal lura Ġerusalemm mit-tielet vjaġġ missjunarju tiegħu f’Antijokja tas-Sirja, f’Efesu, fil-Maċedonja, f’Korintu, f’Filippi u f’Ċesarea, li l-Lhud waħħlu f’rashom li joqtluh. Kif mar fit-tempju, qamet rewwixta sħiħa kontrih u bdew isawtuh bla ħniena. Dakinhar Pawlu ħelisha mill-mewt bis-saħħa tas-suldati Rumani li ħaduh f’idejhom, u wara arrestawh, bagħtuh fil-ħabs ta’ Ċesarija.

F’dan il-ħabs dam sentejn sħaħ fi żmien il-gvernaturi Rumani Feliċ u Festus li t-tnejn kienu konvinti li kien bla ħtija. Iżda xorta waħda baqgħu ma ħelsuhx mill-ħabs minkejja d-difiża qawwija tiegħu għax kienu jibżgħu mill-Lhud. Kien f’għeluq it-tieni sena tiegħu fil-ħabs li waqt li deher quddiem Festus, meta xamm li l-kawża tiegħu kienet ġejja fit-tul, inqeda bil-jedd li kellu ta ċittadin Ruman, appella l-kawża tiegħu quddiem Ċesari. Wara li Festus ikkonsulta mal-kunsill tiegħu, qallu: “Int appellajt għal quddiem Ċesari, u quddiem Ċesari tmur” (Atti, 25, 12).

Fi triqtu lejn Ruma

Ma għaddiex żmien wisq li Pawlu, flimkien ma’ għadd ta’ priġunieri oħra, beda l-vjaġġ tiegħu lejn Ruma taħt il-ħarsien taċ-ċenturjun Ġulju. Kien vjaġġ twil. Hekk kif ħallew ix-xtajta tal-provinċja ta’ Liċja, il-bastiment inqabad f’maltempata kbira u wara erbatax-il lejl, il-bastiment tkaxkar lejn ix-xtajtiet ta’ Malta sakemm tfarrak mal-blat. Iżda minkejja l-periklu kbir li sab ruħu fih Pawlu u dawk li kienu miegħu, ħadd minnhom ma tilef ħajtu.

Bir-raġun aħna l-Maltin ma nehdewx niċċelebraw u nfakkru din id-diżgrazzja kbira. Għax għalina din kienet diżgrazzja bi grazzja għaliex wasslitilna b’mod providenzjali lil Pawlu li baqa’ fostna għal tliet xhur sħaħ. Iżda fl-istess waqt ma nistgħux ninsew il-martirju kbir li għadda minnu Pawlu u sħabu l-oħra, waqt dan in-nawfraġju. Ma nistgħux ninsew li Pawlu kien wieħed mill-priġunieri li s-suldati riedu joqtlu għax beżgħu li xi ħadd minnhom seta’ jaħrab bil-għawm. Għat-tieni darba kien bis-saħħa ta’ ċenturjun li Pawlu salva ħajtu li ma ħalliex il-ħsieb tas-suldati jseħħ.

Sentejn priġunier f’Ruma

Kien fil-bidu tas-sena 61, li wara tliet xhur mill-wasla ta’ Pawlu f’Malta, flimkien mal-priġunieri l-oħra, kompla fi triqtu lejn Ruma fejn kellu jgħaddi sentejn oħra bħala priġunier, sakemm kellha tiġi ttrattata l-kawża tiegħu u jiġi kkundannat. Anki f’Ruma, l-affarijiet ħadu fit-tul u bħala priġunier ta’ ċittadinanza Rumana, għalkemm kien dejjem mgħasses, ħallewh għal sentejn sħaħ joqgħod fid-dar li kien kera. Hemm kien jilqa’ lil dawk kollha li kienu jiġu għandu, jxandrilhom is-Saltna t’Alla u jgħallimhom fuq il-Mulej Ġesù Kristu bil-kuraġġ u bla tfixkil. Kien f’dan iż-żmien li kiteb erba’ mill-isbaħ ittri tiegħu. Dan l-aħħar tagħrif li jagħtina San Luqa dwar Pawlu fi tmiem tal-Atti tal-Appostli.

Wara sentejn, saret il-kawża u Pawlu kien liberat. Pawlu, minkejja dak kollu li kien għadu kif għadda minnu, mill-ewwel ħalla Ruma biex ikompli l-missjoni evanġelizzatriċi tiegħu u ta bidu għar-raba’ vjaġġ missjunarju tiegħu u mar fil-Punent Imbiegħed jigifieri fi Spanja. Wara li telaq minn Spanja, fil-bidu tas-sena 65, għal sentejn sħaħ reġa’ mar fil-Lvant iżur lill-knejjes li hu stess kien waqqaf f’Efesu,  il-Maċedonja, Kreta, Miletu u Korintu.

Lura f’Ruma għall-aħħar darba

Kien fil-bidu tas-sena 67, li Pawlu reġa’ mar Ruma fejn l-Insara kienu jinsabu għaddejjin mit-tieni fażi tal-persekuzzjoni qalila kontrihom mill-Imperatur Neruni. Minkejja l-periklu kbir li kien jinsab fih, Pawlu xorta waħda baqa’ jippersisti fil-ħidma tiegħu tal-predikazzjoni. Issa kien fehem tajjeb li t-tmiem tiegħu kien fil-qrib kif juri biċ-ċar fit-tieni ittra tiegħu lil Timotju meta jgħidlu: “Żmien it-tluq tiegħi wasal. Tqabadt it-taqbida t-tajba, temmejt il-ġirja, ħarist il-fidi. Mill-bqija hemm merfugħa għalija l-kuruna tal-ġustizzja, li biha f’dak il-Jum, iħallasni l-Mulej, u mhux biss, imma wkoll lil dawk kollha li jkunu għexu fl-imħabba tad-Dehra tiegħu.” (2 Tim, 4, 6).

Fil-fatt ma għaddiex żmien wisq li ma ġiex arrestat mill-awtoritajiet Rumani u mixħut fil-ħabs Tullianum, imsejjaħ Mamertinum, fost tant priġunieri ta’ qattagħni. Minħabba li bħala ċittadin Ruman kien taħt il-ħarsien tal-liġi imperjali, biex ikun iddikjarat ħati, kien meħtieġ li jsirulu żewġ akkużi qabel ma jiġi kkundannat.

Wara li saritlu l-ewwel akkuża kellhom jgħaddu x-xhur sakemm jerġa jittella’ l-qorti u ssirlu t-tieni akkuża. Fl-aħħar tellgħuh u saritlu l-aħħar akkuża. Kif kien mistenni, minkejja d-difiża qawwija u kuraġġuża tiegħu, mingħajr ebda prova, instab ħati u l-Imħallef qatagħhielu għall-mewt ta’ qtugħ ir-ras.

Il-martirju barra s-swar ta’ Ruma fis-sena 67

Skont id-drawwa tar-Rumani, jum qabel mewtu, Pawlu ġie meħud barra mill-belt marbut bil-ktajjen fil-post imsejjaħ Ad Aquas Salvas, xi tliet mili ’il bogħod mis-swar ta’ Ruma. Wara li ġie mneżża’ minn ħwejġu u msawwat, ġie marbut ma’ kolonna. Hekk kif baxxa rasu fuq il-kolonna, fost it-tgħajjir u t-theddid ta’ dawk li nġabru madwaru, wieħed mis-suldati resaq fuqu u niżżel ix-xabla tiegħu bis-saħħa kollha fuq għonqu. Kif ras Pawlu nfirdet minn ġismu u waqgħet mal-art f’għadira demm, skont tradizzjoni popolari antika, rasu kif messet mal-art qabżet tliet darbiet ftit ’il bogħod minnu, u kull fejn misset, ħarġu tliet għejun fejn ’il quddiem inbniet l-Abbazia delle Tre Fontane.

Kien f’nofs is-sena 90, li l-Isqof ta’ Ruma Klement I, f’ittra li kiteb lill-knisja ta’ Korintu, wara li semma’ l-martirju ta’ San Pietru, hekk kiteb fuq il-martirju ta’ San Pawl: “Arrestat seba’ darbiet, eżiljat, imħaġġar, huwa kien messaġġier ta’ Kristu fil-lvant u l-punent, u għall-fidi tiegħu akkwista l-glorja sħiħa. Wara li ppriedka l-ġustizzja lid-dinja kollha, u wara li wasal sat-tarf tal-punent, sofra l-martirju quddiem l-awtoritajiet. Hekk hu ħalla din id-dinja u kiseb il-lok qaddis u b’dan sar l-akbar mudell ta’ paċenżja.  (I Klement 5,2).

Il-ġisem mejjet ta’ Pawlu wara ġie midfun f’qabar f’għalqa, propjeta` ta’ waħda sinjura bl-isem ta’ Lucina fil-Via Ostiense. Kien fir-raba’ seklu li l-Insara ta’ Ruma qalgħu l-katavru minn dak il-qabar u difnuh fil-post imsejjaħ Ad Catacumbas fuq Via Appia. Iżda ’il quddiem, l-Imperatur Kostantinu bena bażilika żgħira fil-Via Ostiense fuq l-ewwel qabar ta’ San Pawl. Fis-sena ta’ wara, din l-ewwel bażilika ta’ Kostantinu komplew ikabbruha l-Imperaturi Teodosju, Valentinjanu II u Arkadju.

Fl-1823 din il-bażilika Rumana, imsejħa San Paolo Fuori Le Mura (San Pawl Barra l-Ħitan), inħakmet minn nirien kbar li qerduha. Kien il-Papa Ljun XII li wara ħa ħsieb li terga’ tinbena mill-ġdid fil-forma monumentali tagħha kif narawha llum, bil-faċċata kollha mużajċi u b’portiku mdawwar minn 150 kolonna. Kien il-Beatu Piju IX li kkonsagraha fl-1854.

Bejn l-2002 u l-2006 kien sar stħarriġ arkeoloġiku fuq il-fdalijiet antiki tal-Bażilika ta’ Kostantinu li jmorru lura għas-sena 390 meta din il-bażilika kienet tkabbret mill-Imperaturi Teodosju, Valentinjanu u Arkadju u li kienu ġew salvati wara ħruq tal-1823. Matul dawn l-iskjavi kien instab sarkofagu (kontenitur) kbir sempliċi tal-irħam bir-relikwji li tiegħu kien intilef kull ħjiel. Skont l-arkeologu tal-Mużewijiet tal-Vatikan, Giorgio Filippi li mexxa l-iskjavi, sa minn żmien ta’ Teodosju, dan kien meqjus bħala “il-qabar ta’ San Pawl.”

The BLOOD-stained vest venerated as a holy relic of Saint John Paul II

Bloodied shirt, unwashed fork: JPII relics abound

ROME (AP) — Inside a chapel on the edge of Rome, a nun uses a key to open a wooden wall panel, revealing a hidden niche. Behind glass and stitched loosely to supporting backing hangs a relic of holy suffering: the bullet-pocked, bloodstained undershirt that John Paul II was wearing when a gunman shot him in the stomach in St. Peter's Square.
The short-sleeved garment bears the initials "JP," sewn in red cotton thread on the label by nuns who did his laundry. Jagged rips run down from the neck and sides, made when emergency room staff tore open John Paul's shirt as they raced to save the 60-year-old pontiff's life.
It's one of the most remarkable of the endlessly surfacing relics of John Paul, who will be declared a saint on Sunday in the very same square where a Turkish would-be assassin shot him on May 13, 1981.

Relics of John Paul have enjoyed a boom ever since the beloved pope was beatified in 2011, and they are gaining heightened significance — as well as a surge of veneration — ahead of his canonization. The phenomenon has been fueled by John Paul's longtime Polish confidant and secretary, Stanislaw Dziwisz, who doles them out to churches that request them. The Vatican also played a role in the relic fever by breaking its own rules to allow worldwide veneration of John Paul's relics as soon as he was beatified, rather than waiting until he became a saint.
The famous undergarment was discovered by the head nurse in the operating room at Rome's Gemelli Polyclinic as she was cleaning the floor.
"She understood that the undershirt could be important," said Sister Amelia Cicconofri, who displays the undershirt at Regina Mundi church upon request. "She picked it up, rolled it in a towel and kept it in her closet at home."
Nurse Anna Stanghellini, who lived out her last years at the church's convent, donated the shirt to the nuns there, bequeathing a vivid and tangible testimony to John Paul's physical suffering.

Relics of John Paul are by no means limited to Rome. John Paul was the world's first globe-trotting pope, and he left things associated with him scattered around the globe. To qualify as a relic, an object needs only to have been in physical contact with the saint in question.
The Manila area restaurant where John Paul dined during his 1995 pilgrimage to the Philippines shows off the spoon, fork, water goblet, knives and table napkin — all still unwashed after his meal of grilled fish and fried shrimp. Elsewhere in the predominantly Catholic Asian nation, shopping malls this month are showing strands of his silvery-white hair and a piece of bedsheet from his deathbed.
Irish Julia Feniquito, a 24-year-old nurse in the Phiippines' Quezon City, was still wearing her blue scrubs and looking to buy a dress when she passed by a traveling exhibit of John Paul relics in one shopping mall. She kneeled to pray for several minutes in front of a makeshift altar and wrote her reflections on a sheet of paper, which she slipped into a box under a papal skull cap.
"His aura, when you first see him, you can tell that he is very holy," Feniquito said.
"John Paul II probably has stuff all over the place," considering he was the third-longest serving pontiff, said the Rev. Raymond Kupke, a professor of church history at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. "If you think of all the places he has been, the amount of relics is enormous."
A tiny church in the Naples hinterland packed its pews for nine days earlier this year when it displayed a gold-covered reliquary containing a drop of papal blood drawn for analysis from John Paul on his last day on Earth. For the faithful, it's a profoundly moving testament to the pope's courage in the face of death and suffering.
"This was the last blood taken from the Holy Father, his last day of life," said the Rev. Jonas Gianneo, pastor of Santa Maria Francesca delle Cinque Piaghe church in Casoria. The pastor said that the drop came from a vial of blood saved by Dziwisz, now cardinal of Krakow.
Amid the proliferation of John Paul relics, Vatican experts say, it's important to make key distinctions: Relics are categorized by the Vatican as "first-class" (those that are part of the saint's body, such as bones or blood), "second-class" (items owned or used by a saint) and "third-class" (mostly things that were touched by the saint).
It's not just rank-and-file faithful who cherish a relic of John Paul.
Monsignor Piero Marini, John Paul's right-hand man for decades, told The Associated Press that "every now and then" he kept some of the handkerchiefs the pontiff used in ceremonies, especially the last ones.
"I still have them," Marini said.
He also kept some cloth stained by blood when John Paul once caught a pinky in a car door. That's a decidedly minor event compared to a papal assassination attempt — and Marini expressed awe of the bloodied undershirt.
"When they put it under glass," he said, "I had a vision of almost an icon of the undershirt, because you saw the wounds, the blood."
True relics "are those of the body," Marini said. "The body is the place where the Holy Spirit produced its effect, where it worked."
Selling relics is sacrilegious — but nothing stops the faithful from making a "donation" to whoever provided the relic, or purchasing the often ornate container holding the relic itself.
Relics are particularly prized in John Paul's native Poland — and there, too, Dziwisz' influence is everywhere felt.
In Krakow, there is a vial of John Paul's blood drawn in 2005 before a tracheotomy. In the pope's birth-town, Wadowice, a reliquary in the basilica holds a drop of his blood. His first home is also a popular attraction.
"Something tangible must be left behind. A proof that he really existed," said Bogusia Weglik, a middle-aged woman from Wadowice, after praying at the basilica. "Something for the next generations, or else they will turn wild."
The other pope to become a saint on Sunday — John XXIII — has not attracted anywhere near the relic frenzy of John Paul. John XXIII, who called the revolutionary Vatican II Council, only served as pope for 4½ years, and there are simply not that many objects associated with him.
"Fifty years (after his death) there aren't relics, not only first-class ones, but not even second-class ones," said Monsignor Giulio Dellavite, an official of the diocese of Bergamo, in northern Italy, where John XXIII grew up. "We receive requests from all over the world, for relics for altars, but we cannot satisfy them."
However, an urn containing bone fragments from John XXIII used in his Vatican saint-making ceremony will be sent to Bergamo's cathedral, so the faithful will be able to venerate him there.
At Rome's Regina Mundi church, pilgrims — mainly from Poland — come in tour buses to pray before John Paul's undershirt. Occasionally solitary visitors wanting to see it also ring the convent bell. Recent entries in the guest book were written in Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
"Dear St. Pope," wrote one person — well before the Vatican's official decision on John Paul's canonization.

These are the readings for the memorial

First reading
Isaiah 61:9-11

I exult for joy in the Lord

Their race will be famous throughout the nations,

their descendants throughout the peoples.

All who see them will admit

that they are a race whom the Lord has blessed.

‘I exult for joy in the Lord,

my soul rejoices in my God,

for he has clothed me in the garments of salvation,

he has wrapped me in the cloak of integrity,

like a bridegroom wearing his wreath,

like a bride adorned in her jewels.

‘For as the earth makes fresh things grow,

as a garden makes seeds spring up,

so will the Lord make both integrity and praise

spring up in the sight of the nations.’

Responsorial Psalm
1 Samuel 2:1,4-8

My heart exults in the Lord my Saviour.

My heart exults in the Lord.

  I find my strength in my God;

my mouth laughs at my enemies

as I rejoice in your saving help.

My heart exults in the Lord my Saviour.

The bows of the mighty are broken,

but the weak are clothed with strength.

Those with plenty must labour for bread,

but the hungry need work no more.

The childless wife has children now

but the fruitful wife bears no more.

My heart exults in the Lord my Saviour.

It is the Lord who gives life and death,

  he brings men to the grave and back;

it is the Lord who gives poverty and riches.

He brings men low and raises them on high.

My heart exults in the Lord my Saviour.

He lifts up the lowly from the dust,

from the dungheap he raises the poor

to set him in the company of princes

to give him a glorious throne.

For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,

on them he has set the world.

My heart exults in the Lord my Saviour.

Gospel Acclamation
cf.Lk2:19

Alleluia, alleluia!

Blessed is the Virgin Mary,

who treasured the word of God

and pondered it in her heart.

Alleluia!

PROPER GOSPEL - Lk 2:41-51 -- His mother treasured all these things in her heart - Kienet iżżomm u tgħożż dawn il-ħwejjeġ  ġo qalbha.

Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary ---
The Gospel on SATURDAY morning after Friday, THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS

Evanġelju
Kienet iżżomm u tgħożż dawn il-ħwejjeġ ġo qalbha.
Lq 2, 41-51

Qari mill-Evanġelju skont San Luqa [Lq:2:41] Ta' kull sena l-ġenituri ta' Ġesù kienu jmorru Ġerusalemm għall-festa ta' l-Għid. [Lq:2:42] Meta kellu tnax-il sena, telgħu, kif kienet id-drawwa, għall-festa. [Lq:2:43] U wara li għaddew dawk il-jiem huma u sejrin lura, it-tifel Ġesù baqa' Ġerusalemm bla ma kienu jafu l-ġenituri tiegħu. [Lq:2:44] Billi ħasbuh qiegħed ma' dawk li kienu fit-triq magħhom, baqgħu mexjin jum sħiħ, imbagħad bdew ifittxuh fost qrabathom u n-nies li kienu jafu. [Lq:2:45] Iżda billi ma sabuhx, reġgħu lura Ġerusalemm ifittxuh. [Lq:2:46] Wara tlitt ijiem sabuh fit-Tempju, bilqiegħda f'nofs il-għorrief, jismagħhom u jistaqsihom; [Lq:2:47] u kull min semgħu baqa' mistagħġeb bid-dehen u t-tweġibiet tiegħu. [Lq:2:48] Kif rawh, stamtu, ommu qaltlu: "Ibni, għaliex għamiltilna hekk? Ara, missierek u jiena konna qegħdin infittxuk b'qalbna maqsuma!" [Lq:2:49] U hu qalilhom: "Il-għala kontu qegħdin tfittxuni? Ma tafux li jiena jeħtieġli nkun f'dak li hu ta' Missieri?" [Lq:2:50] Iżda huma ma fehmuhiex il-kelma li qalilhom. [Lq:2:51] Imbagħad niżel magħhom u reġa' ġie Nazaret; u kien joqgħod għalihom. U ommu kienet tgħożż f’qalbha dawn il-ħwejjeġ kollha. Il-Kelma tal-Mulej R/. Tifħir lilek Kristu

PSALMODY

Ant. 1 As morning breaks we sing of your mercy, Lord, and night will find us proclaiming your fidelity.

Psalm 92
Praise of God the Creator
Sing in praise of Christ’s redeeming work (Saint Athanasius)
It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to make music to your name, O Most High,
to proclaim your love in the morning
and your truth in the watches of the night,
on the ten-stringed lyre and the lute,
with the murmuring sound of the harp.
Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad;
for the work of your hands I shout with joy.
O Lord, how great are your works!
How deep are your designs!
The foolish man cannot know this
and the fool cannot understand.
Though the wicked spring up like grass
and all who do evil thrive:
they are doomed to be eternally destroyed.
But you, Lord, are eternally on high.
See how your enemies perish;
all doers of evil are scattered.
To me you give the wild-ox’s strength;
you anoint me with the purest oil.
My eyes looked in triumph on my foes;
my ears heard gladly of their fall.
The just will flourish like the palm-tree
and grow like a Lebanon cedar.
Planted in the house of the Lord
they will flourish in the courts of our God,
still bearing fruit when they are old,
still full of sap, still green,
to proclaim that the Lord is just;
In him, my rock, there is no wrong.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
— as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
Psalm-prayer
Take our shame away from us, Lord, and make us rejoice in your saving works. May all who have been chosen by your Son always abound in works of faith, hope, and love in your service.
Ant. 1 As morning breaks we sing of your mercy, Lord, and night will find us proclaiming your fidelity.

Ant.2 Extol the greatness of our God.
Canticle – Deuteronomy 32:1-12
God’s kindness to his people
How often have I longed to gather your children as a hen gathers her brood under her wing. (Matthew 23:37)
Give ear, O heavens, while I speak;
let the earth hearken to the words of my mouth!
May my instruction soak in like the rain,
and my discourse permeate like the dew,
Like a downpour upon the grass,
like a shower upon the crops:
For I will sing the Lord’s renown.
Oh, proclaim the greatness of our God!
The Rock – how faultless are his deeds,
 how right all his ways!
A faithful God, without deceit,
how just and upright he is!
Yet basely has he been treated by his degenerate children,
a perverse and crooked race!
Is the Lord to be thus repaid by you,
O stupid and foolish people?
Is he not your father who created you?
Has he not made you and established you?
Think back on the days of old,
reflect on the years of age upon age.
Ask your father and he will inform you,
ask your elders and they will tell you:
When the Most High assigned the nations their heritage,
when he parceled out the descendants of Adam,
He set up the boundaries of the peoples
after the number of the sons of God;
While the Lord’s own portion was Jacob,
His hereditary share was Israel.
He found them in a wilderness,
a wasteland of howling desert.
He shielded them and cared for them,
guarding them as the apple of his eye.
As an eagle incites its nestlings forth
by hovering over its brood,
So he spread his wings to receive them
and bore them up on his pinions.
The Lord alone was their leader,
no strange god was with him.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
— as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
Ant. 2 Extol the greatness of our God.

Ant. 3 How wonderful is your name, O Lord, in all creation.
Psalm 8
Praise for God’s loving compassion
I affirm that… the Gentile peoples are to praise God because of his mercy
 (Romans 15:8-9)
How great is your name, O Lord our God,
through all the earth!
Your majesty is praised above the heavens;
on the lips of children and of babes
you have found praise to foil your enemy,
to silence the foe and the rebel.
When I see the heavens, the work of your hands,
the moon and the stars which you arranged,
what is man that you should keep him in mind,
mortal man that you care for him?
Yet you have made him little less than a god;
with glory and honour you crowned him,
gave him power over the works of your hands,
put all things under his feet.
All of them, sheep and cattle,
yes, even the savage beasts,
birds of the air, and fish that make their way through the waters.
How great is your name, O Lord our God
through all the earth!
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
Psalm-prayer
Almighty Lord, how wonderful is your name. You have made every creature subject to you; make us worthy to give you service.
Ant. 3 How wonderful is your name, O Lord, in all creation.
READING See Isaiah 61:10
I rejoice heartily in the Lord,
in my God is the joy of my soul;
For he has clothed me with a robe of salvation,
and wrapped me in a mantle of justice,
like a bride bedecked with her jewels.

- The Word of the Lord - Thanks be to God

Sacred Silence (indicated by a bell) – a moment to reflect and receive in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely with the word of God and public voice of the Church.
RESPONSORY
The Lord has chosen her, his loved one from the beginning.
— The Lord has chosen her, his loved one from the beginning.
He has taken her to live with him,
— his loved one from the beginning.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, — The Lord has chosen her, his loved one from the beginning.
CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH
Ant. My heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.
Luke 1:68 – 79
The Messiah and his forerunner
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty saviour,
born of the house of his servant David.
Through his holy prophets he promised of old
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.
You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever. Amen.
Ant. My heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.
INTERCESSIONS
Let us glorify our Saviour, who chose the Virgin Mary for his mother. Let us ask him: May your mother intercede for us, Lord.
Sun of Justice, the immaculate Virgin was the white dawn announcing your rising,
— grant that we may always live in the light of your coming.
May your mother intercede for us, Lord.
Eternal Word, you chose Mary as the uncorrupted ark of your dwelling place,
 — free us from the corruption of sin.
May your mother intercede for us, Lord.
Saviour of mankind, your mother stood at the foot of your cross,
— grant, through her intercession, that we may rejoice to share in your passion.
May your mother intercede for us, Lord.
With ultimate generosity and love, you gave Mary as a mother to your beloved disciple,
— help us to live as worthy sons of so noble a mother.
May your mother intercede for us, Lord.
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Concluding Prayer
O God,
who prepared a fit dwelling place for the Holy Spirit
in the Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
graciously grant that through her intercession
we may be a worthy temple of your glory.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
 — Amen.
DISMISSAL
May the Lord bless us, protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life.
— Amen.

IS-SIBT FUQ IT-2 ĦADD WARA GĦID IL-ĦAMSIN
Festa tal-Qalb Bla Tebgħa ta' Marija

ATT TA’ KONSAGRAZZJONI LILL-QALB BLA TEBGĦA TA’ MARIJA

O Marija, Omm ta’ Alla u Omm tagħna, f’din is-siegħa tat-tiġrib aħna lejk induru. Inti Omm, li tħobbna u tafna: għalik xejn mhu moħbi minn dak li għandna għal qalbna. Omm tal-ħniena, tant drabi aħna doqna l-ħlewwa tiegħek kollha providenza, il-preżenza tiegħek li troddilna s-sliem, għax int dejjem tmexxina lejn Ġesù, il-Prinċep tas-sliem.
Imma aħna tlifna t-triq tal-paċi. Insejnieha l-lezzjoni tat-traġedji tal-aħħar seklu, is-sagrifiċċju tal-miljuni li mietu fil-gwerer dinjija. Warrabna l-impenji li ħadna bħala Komunità tan-Nazzjonijiet u qed nittradixxu l-ħolm tal-popli għall-paċi u t-tamiet taż-żgħażagħ. Imradna bir-regħba, ingħalaqna fl-interessi nazzjonalistiċi tagħna, ħallejna l-indifferenza tnixxfilna qalbna u l-egoiżmu jipparalizzana. Ippreferejna ninjoraw lil Alla, ngħixu mal-qerq tagħna, inħeġġu l-aggressività, nisħqu ħajjiet u nġemmgħu armi, u nsejna li aħna ħarriesa tal-proxxmu tagħna u tal-istess dar komuni. Bil-gwerra aħna ħarbatna l-ġnien tal-Art, bid-dnub weġġajna l-qalb ta’ Alla Missierna, li jridna lkoll aħwa. Sirna indifferenti lejn kulħadd u kollox, ħlief lejna nfusna. U mriegħxa ngħidu: Aħfrilna, Mulej!

Qalb il-miżerja tad-dnub, it-taħbit u d-dgħufijiet tagħna, il-misteru tal-ħażen u tal-gwerra, int, Omm qaddisa, tfakkarna li Alla ma jitlaqniex waħidna, imma jibqa’ jmexxina bi mħabbtu, għax jixtieq jaħfrilna u jerġa’ jerfagħna fuq saqajna. Kien hu li tana lilek u qiegħed fil-Qalb bla tebgħa tiegħek kenn għall-Knisja u għall-umanità. Bi tjieba divina int tinsab magħna, u mqar qalb l-idjeq liwjiet tal-istorja tmexxina bi ħlewwa.

Għalhekk lejk induru, inħabbtu fuq il-bieb tal-Qalb tiegħek, aħna, l-ulied għeżież tiegħek li f’kull żmien int ma tehdiex iżżur u tistieden għall-konverżjoni. F’din is-siegħa mudlama ejja biex tidħol għalina u tfarraġna. Tenni lil kull wieħed u waħda minna: “Forsi mhux hawn qiegħda jiena, l-Omm tiegħek?”. Inti taf kif tħoll l-għoqiedi tal-qalb tagħna u ta’ żmienna. Fik inqiegħdu l-fiduċja tagħna. Aħna żguri li int, speċjalment fis-siegħa tal-prova, ma tistmerrx it-talbiet tagħna u tindukrana.

Hekk għamilt f’Kana tal-Galilija, meta għaġġilt is-siegħa tal-indħil ta’ Ġesù u hekk introduċejt l-ewwel sinjal tiegħu fid-dinja. Meta l-festa kienet għoddha nbidlet fi mrar, int għidtlu: “M’għandhomx inbid” (Ġw 2:3). Tennih dan mill-ġdid lil Alla, ja Omm tagħna, għax illum spiċċalna l-inbid tat-tama, għeb il-ferħ, ġiet fix-xejn il-fraternità. Tlifna l-umanità tagħna, kasbarna l-paċi. Sirna kapaċi għal kull vjolenza u qerda. Għandna bżonn urġenti tal-intervent tiegħek ta’ omm.

Ilqa’, mela, Omm tagħna, din it-talba tagħna.

Int, Kewkba tal-baħar, tħalliniex niġġarrfu fit-tempesta tal-gwerra.

Int, Arka tal-patt il-ġdid, nebbaħ proġetti u toroq ta’ rikonċiljazzjoni.

Int, “art tas-Sema”, reġġa’ lura l-ftehim li jrid Alla fid-dinja.

Eqred il-mibegħda, rażżan il-vendetta, għallimna l-maħfra.

Eħlisna mill-gwerra, ħares lid-dinja mit-theddida nukleari.

Sultana tar-Rużarju, erġa’ qanqal fina l-ħtieġa li nitolbu u li nħobbu.

Sultana tal-familja tal-bnedmin, uri lill-popli t-triq tal-fraternità.

Sultana tal-paċi, ġib il-paċi fid-dinja.
Ja Omm tagħna, ħa jċaqlaq il-biki tiegħek il-qlub iebsa tagħna. Ħa jkun id-dmugħ li għalina xerridt dak li jwarrad mill-ġdid dan il-wied imnixxef mill-mibegħda tagħna. U waqt li l-istorbju tal-armi madwarna ma jehdiex, ħa tkun it-talba tiegħek li ġġibilna l-paċi. B’dirgħajk ta’ omm żiegħel int b’dawk li qed ibatu u jaħarbu taħt il-piż tal-bombi. Bit-tħaddina tiegħek ta’ omm farraġ int lil dawk li jkollhom iħallu djarhom u pajjiżhom. Ħa tkun il-Qalb muġugħa tiegħek li tqanqalna bil-ħniena u ssuqna biex niftħu l-bibien tagħna u nieħdu ħsieb tal-umanità miġruħa u mormija.

Omm Qaddisa ta’ Alla, xħin kont taħt is-salib, Ġesù, kif lemaħ lid-dixxiplu ħdejk, qallek: “Hawn hu ibnek” (Ġw 19:26): hekk hu fdalek lil kull wieħed u waħda minna. Imbagħad lid-dixxiplu, lil kull wieħed u waħda minna, hu qal: “Hawn hi ommok” (v. 27). Omm tagħna, aħna issa nixtiequ nilqgħuk fil-ħajja tagħna u fl-istorja tagħna. F’din is-siegħa l-umanità, mifnija u mħawda, tinsab miegħek taħt is-salib. U għandha bżonn tafda fik, tikkonsagra ruħha lil Kristu permezz tiegħek. Il-poplu Ukren u l-poplu Russu, li bi mħabba jqimuk, issa jirrikorru għandek, waqt li l-Qalb tiegħek tħabbat għalihom u għall-popli kollha mifnija mill-gwerra, mill-ġuħ, mill-inġustizzja u mill-miżerja.

Aħna, għalhekk, Omm Alla u Omm tagħna, solennement nafdaw u nikkonsagraw lilna nfusna, lill-Knisja u lill-umanità kollha, b’mod speċjali r-Russja u l-Ukrajna, lill-Qalb bla tebgħa tiegħek. Ilqa’ dan l-att tagħna li qed inwettqu b’fiduċja u mħabba, agħmel li tieqaf il-gwerra, rodd il-paċi lid-dinja. L-“Iva” li ħarġet mill-Qalb tiegħek fetħet il-bibien tal-istorja għall-Prinċep tas-sliem; aħna għandna fiduċja mill-ġdid li, permezz tal-Qalb tiegħek, il-paċi għad tasal. Lilek għalhekk nikkonsagraw il-ġejjieni tal-familja umana kollha, il-ħtiġijiet u x-xewqat tal-popli, il-biżgħat u t-tamiet tad-dinja.

Permezz tiegħek ħa tissawwab fuq l-Art il-Ħniena divina, waqt li t-tokki ħelwin tal-paċi jerġgħu jimmarkaw il-jiem tagħna. O Mara tal-“iva”, li fuqek niżel l-Ispirtu s-Santu, reġġa’ fostna l-armonija ta’ Alla. Aqta’ l-għatx tal-qalb tagħna, int li int “għajn ħajja tat-tama”. Int li nsiġt l-umanità ta’ Ġesù, agħmel minna bennejja tal-komunjoni. Int li mxejt fit-toroq tagħna, mexxina tul il-mogħdijiet tas-sliem. Ammen.
